The newest secondary title in a decades-old wrestling dynasty
In short: WWE spent over sixty years without a secondary women's championship on its main roster. That changed in late 2024 with the debut of the Women's United States Championship, a title designed to mirror the men's division while carving out a specific identity for the SmackDown brand.
The introduction of the Women's United States Championship in November 2024 marked a significant structural shift for WWE. While the promotion was founded in April 1963, it lacked a secondary women's title on its main roster until this period. The new championship was unveiled by general manager Nick Aldis on November 8, 2024, specifically to counter the men's WWE United States Championship. It was followed shortly by the Women's Intercontinental Championship on the Raw brand on November 25, 2024.
The title's lineage began with a 12-woman tournament that featured high-profile names like Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill. After Cargill was pulled from the bracket due to a backstage assault, Lash Legend took her place. Chelsea Green eventually won the inaugural title on December 14, 2024, at Saturday Night's Main Event XXXVII by defeating Michin. Since its inception, the belt has seen seven reigns across five different champions as of October 10, 2026.
Visually, the belt maintains a close relationship with its male counterpart but features distinct modifications. Positioned on a white strap, the belt displays 'Women's' in tiny blue letters over 'United States'. On 21 August 2026, a visual modification debuted when Jacy Jayne added a blue backdrop behind the upper stars, a motif originally used for Trick Williams's bespoke male title during July 2026. This evolution highlights the ongoing tension between maintaining brand consistency and allowing for individual champion customization.
