The wrestling title that survived a corporate divorce and a rebranding
In short: In 2007, a sudden contract termination stripped TNA of its prestigious NWA tag team titles. Instead of letting the lineage die, the promotion forged a new identity. From leather straps to owl-adorned plates, this championship has survived era shifts, name changes, and even solo champions.
The TNA World Tag Team Championship was born from necessity following a corporate split. In 2007, the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) ended its five-year agreement with TNA. This move stripped then-champions Team 3D of their titles because NWA's Executive Director Robert Trobich wanted to keep the belts within specific territories. To preserve the lineage, TNA officially unveiled a new championship belt on May 17, 2007, awarding it to Team 3D as the inaugural champions.
The title has undergone significant aesthetic evolutions reflecting the promotion's branding. It featured four distinct designs over its history: an early leather strap with gold plates; a recolored version of Global Force Wrestling (GFW) titles in 2017; an oblong design featuring owl motifs in 2018; and a final redesign in January 2024 to coincide with the company's rebranding back to TNA Wrestling. These changes often followed high-profile departures, such as Jeff Jarrett leaving with the GFW name.
The championship's history is marked by statistical extremes. The North (Ethan Page and Josh Alexander) holds the record for the longest reign at 380 days, while Eric Young/Super Eric and Kaz hold the shortest reign ever recorded—a mere half day. While primarily a team prize, three individuals have held it alone: Samoa Joe, Kurt Angle (for 15 days), and Matt Morgan. A total of 76 shared titles have occurred involving 49 duos and 74 individual competitors.
