How a $900 pizza loan built a billion-dollar empire and a religious legacy
In short: After surviving an orphanage in Michigan, Tom Monaghan transformed a struggling pizza shop into the global giant Domino's. His journey from a student architect to a billionaire philanthropist is a story of rapid expansion, high-stakes sports ownership, and a dramatic pivot toward religious devotion.
Tom Monaghan's path to wealth began in 1960 when he and his brother James borrowed $900 to buy DomiNick's in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Originally intending to study architecture at the University of Michigan, Monaghan pivoted to the pizza business to fund his education. His strategy for growth was rooted in innovation; he developed a new insulated pizza box that allowed for stacking without crushing the pies, enabling more deliveries per trip and ensuring food stayed warm.
By the mid-1980s, his franchising model was expanding so rapidly that nearly three new Domino's locations were opening every day. This success allowed Monaghan to diversify into professional sports, including owning the Detroit Tigers from 1983 to 1992. During his tenure, the Tigers won the World Series in 1984. His lifestyle was famously lavish, featuring a collection of Frank Lloyd Wright artifacts—including a $1.6 million dining set—and an $8.1 million Bugatti Royale.
However, Monaghan's life underwent a significant shift following his reading of C. S. Lewis on the dangers of pride. He began divesting his ostentatious assets, selling the Tigers in 1992 and giving up his luxury office suite. In 1998, he sold 93% of his Domino's stock to Bain Capital for an estimated $1 billion. Since then, he has dedicated his fortune to Catholic causes, establishing the Ave Maria Foundation and various educational institutions, such as the Ave Maria School of Law, to promote his faith and social conservative values.
