How a versatile defender became the cornerstone of Bruno Lage's Benfica
In short: From a promising academy prospect to a Champions League standout, Tomás Araújo's rise is a masterclass in tactical adaptability. By mastering both centre-back and right-back roles, he transformed from a loanee into an indispensable asset for both club and country.
Born on 16 May 2002, Tomás Araújo's journey through the Benfica academy began in 2016 when he was just 14 years old. After progressing through the youth ranks, he secured his first professional contract in May 2018. His early years were marked by significant milestones, including a professional debut for Benfica's B team in September 2020 and a pivotal role in the club's 2021–22 UEFA Youth League victory, which represented Benfica's first European trophy in 60 years.
Araújo's development was furthered by a strategic loan to Gil Vicente during the 2022–24 period. It was here that he proved his capability in the Primeira Liga, scoring his first top-flight goal in March 2023. Upon returning to Benfica, he signed a long-term contract extension in July 2023 that keeps him with the 'Eagles' until 2028.
The true breakthrough occurred under manager Bruno Lage. In October 2024, Araújo earned a starting position over António Silva, notably during a 4–0 Champions League victory against Atlético Madrid. Lage valued Araújo for his speed and passing quality, noting his ability to cover defensive gaps and facilitate play from the back. This tactical reliability led to him being named the Primeira Liga Defender of the Month for November 2024, following a four-match winning streak for his club.
His international progression has been equally rapid. After representing Portugal at the U17 and U21 levels, Araújo earned his senior international debut in November 2024 during a Nations League match against Croatia. His ascent has positioned him as a key figure for the future, having been selected for Portugal's 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
