From rickets and vision loss to a historic baseball turnaround
In short: Tommy Pham’s path to the MLB was obstructed by physical hurdles that would have sidelined most athletes. From wearing leg braces as a child to overcoming a severe vision impairment, his career is a masterclass in persistence over pedigree.
Born in Las Vegas to parents who were struggling financially—his father was incarcerated at the time of his birth—Pham faced early physical adversity. As a two-year-old, doctors feared he had contracted rickets, requiring him to wear leg braces for eighteen months. His upbringing was marked by absence; because his mother worked multiple jobs as a busser and casino waitress to support them, Pham recalls being able to count on only one hand the number of games she attended.
His professional journey was nearly derailed by health crises. In 2008, he suffered from keratoconus, a vision impairment that required him to switch to contact lenses to achieve 20/15 vision in both eyes. He also endured a grueling string of injuries during his minor league years, including a fractured wrist in 2010 and torn labrum ligaments in both shoulders between 2011 and 2013. It took him nine seasons after being drafted in the 16th round of the 2006 MLB draft to finally make his debut.
During 2017, Pham achieved a milestone by becoming the earliest Cardinals hitter since 1900 to reach 20 stolen bases, 20 doubles, 20 home runs, and a .300 average within one year. A self-described student of sabermetrics, he utilized Statcast data and intense workout regimens to refine his skills. Despite facing significant personal challenges—including a stabbing incident in 2020 that left him with 'catastrophic injuries' requiring 200 stitches—Pham remains a notable example of athletic resilience.
His career has been defined by versatility, moving from shortstop to the outfield and playing for nearly a dozen different MLB organizations. Whether navigating a trade to the Tampa Bay Rays or signing with the Cincinnati Reds, Pham has consistently prioritized personal growth and statistical improvement as his primary motivation.
