In short: Tomo Aizawa is a high schooler struggling with a frustrating paradox. She is a combat sports expert who wants to be more feminine, yet she is stuck in a cycle of unrequited love with a childhood friend who only sees her as one of the boys.

Written and illustrated by Fumita Yanagida, the four-panel manga series Tomo-chan Is a Girl! began its serialization on the Twi4 Twitter account and Saizensen website on April 7, 2015. The story centers on Tomo Aizawa, a tomboy who excels in combat sports and is a member of her school's karate club. Despite her athletic prowess, she struggles with her masculine personality and her deep, long-standing feelings for her neighbor and childhood best friend, Junichiro Kubota. Her attempts to win his heart often result in physical outbursts or comedic failure, as Junichiro views her strictly as one of the boys.

The narrative complexity is heightened by a supporting cast of distinct personalities. Misuzu, Tomo's petite and cunning best friend, often plays the straight man to the duo but secretly fears losing Tomo to a romantic relationship. Meanwhile, Carol Olston, a wealthy school idol of British descent, provides a contrast to Tomo's struggles, despite her own complicated family history and engagement to Kōsuke Misaki. The series explores these interpersonal dynamics through a comedic lens, focusing on the friction between Tomo's identity and her desire for romantic reciprocation.

The series gained significant recognition, winning the Next Manga Award in the web manga category in 2016. Following its successful run, which concluded on July 14, 2019, Kodansha published eight tankōbon volumes. The popularity of the manga eventually led to an anime television series adaptation produced by Lay-duce. This 13-episode adaptation aired from January 5 to March 30, 2023, bringing Tomo's comedic journey to a wider audience via networks like Tokyo MX and streaming services like Crunchyroll.
