In short: Before he was known as 'Bomber' for his spectacular goals, Tony Brown fought a different battle. Suffering from asthma from just three months old, the future West Bromwich Albion icon overcame physical limitations to become one of the most prolific scorers in English football history.

Born in 1945, Tony Brown’s path to professional football was far from certain. Struggling with asthma from infancy until the age of fourteen, his ambitions were nonetheless set on the pitch. Though he grew up a Manchester United supporter and idolised Manchester City’s Denis Law, a chance encounter with a West Bromwich Albion scout, John Shaw, changed his trajectory. At just 15, Brown opted against signing for his local club, Manchester City, after a trial at The Hawthorns made him feel instantly at home.

Brown’s career at West Bromwich Albion was defined by remarkable longevity and clinical efficiency. Joining as an apprentice in 1961, he turned professional in 1963. During his 17 years at the club, he established records that stood for decades, scoring 279 goals in 720 competitive appearances. His era was marked by significant silverware, including the 1966 Football League Cup and the 1968 FA Cup, as well as several cup final appearances.

His individual prowess was equally notable. In the 1970–71 season, he emerged as the top scorer in Division One with 28 goals, an achievement that earned him his sole full England cap in May 1971. A specialist from the penalty spot, Brown converted 51 of 61 spot-kicks during his tenure. Even after moving to the United States to play for the New England Tea Men in 1980, his legacy remained anchored at Albion, where a statue was unveiled in his honour in 2014.
