From a 16th-century royal charter to a 21st-century price-fixing scandal
In short: Founded in 1553, Tonbridge School has survived centuries of upheaval, from the reign of Edward VI to the rise of the East India Company. Yet, its modern history includes a 2005 investigation into an illegal price-fixing cartel, proving that even the most storied institutions face contemporary legal reckoning.
Founded in 1553 by Andrew Judde, the school received its royal charter from Edward VI. Judde served as the sole governor until his death in 1558, at which point the school passed to the Worshipful Company of Skinners following a dispute with his business partner, Henry Fisher.
The school's early history was marked by fluctuations in numbers, occasionally dropping to as few as 17 pupils under Vicesimus Knox in 1772. However, the arrival of his son, also Vicesimus Knox, in 1779 saw numbers surge to 85 as pupils began arriving from across England and abroad. A notable 1765 decision allowed local parishioners' children to attend for a sixpence fee, provided they could read Latin and English perfectly.
The 19th century saw a shift toward sporting prestige, particularly cricket. In 1838, the school leveled the 'Head'—a significant engineering project using earth from local railway workings—to create one of the south of England's most beautiful cricket grounds. This era also saw the construction of Judde House, the school's second boarding house, and the establishment of the school's first cricket blue in 1839.
Modernity brought both cultural shifts and legal challenges. In the 1960s, Headmaster Michael McCrum revitalized the school's intellectual life and abolished personal fagging. Despite this, the institution joined fifty prominent private academies convicted of operating a prohibited price-fixing ring to inflate costs in 2005. The schools argued they were following a long-established practice of sharing information, unaware that the law had changed to prohibit such actions.
