In short: Founded in 1432, Sevenoaks School has evolved from a small local grammar school into one of the world's leading academic institutions. While its history is steeped in centuries of tradition, the school is best known today for its pioneering, full-scale adoption of the International Baccalaureate and its modern, award-winning campus.

Established by William Sevenoke, a former Mayor of London, the school was originally intended to provide a classical education free of charge. Over the centuries, it transitioned from a minor public school into an experimental hub. By the mid-20th century, under headmaster Kim Taylor, the school gained national prominence for adopting innovative teaching methods, including the 'New Maths' approach, which sought to make the subject more engaging and less abstract for students.

The school's academic identity underwent a radical shift in 2006 when it became the first major institution in the United Kingdom to replace A-level examinations entirely with the International Baccalaureate. This commitment has yielded significant results; as of 2025, Sevenoaks ranks among the top five IB schools in the UK and the top 15 globally. In that same year, the average IB Diploma score reached 39.4 points, with 11 students achieving the maximum score of 45.

Despite its academic prestige, the school has faced controversy. Between 2001 and 2004, it was involved in a fee-fixing cartel with other independent schools, an action for which it was found guilty by the Office of Fair Trading. More recently, in 2020, reports surfaced regarding a policy of inflating predicted grades for university applications. The school subsequently clarified its practices and updated its staff handbook following engagement with the Charity Commission and reminders from UCAS regarding official guidelines.

Today, the school operates as a co-educational institution for pupils aged three to 18, following a 2025 merger with the local Solefield School. Its campus features modern facilities like the 2010 performing arts centre, 'The Space', and a 2018 Science and Technology Centre, both of which have received architectural recognition. These structures stand alongside historic buildings like the 18th-century Old School, reflecting a long-standing evolution from a medieval foundation to a contemporary educational leader.
