The only UC campus to field a football team

The 'Aggies' nickname is a direct nod to the university's history as the College of Agriculture at Davis. Originally part of UC Berkeley, the institution was separated by the UC Regents in 1959. This agricultural heritage defines the school's identity, even as its athletic reach has expanded into a complex web of various conferences. While most of the school's 25 intercollegiate sports compete in the Mountain West Conference, the football program remains a distinct outlier, competing in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) as a member of the Big Sky Conference.
The football program's journey began in 1915 as part of the broader University of California team. Operations suffered major breaks, specifically in 1918 during the First World War and between 1943 and 1945 while the University Farm site was closed. Despite these gaps, the program has won 31 conference championships, including a notable 20-year streak of Northern California Athletic Conference titles between 1971 and 1990. The program officially became a full member of Division I in 2007 after a period of exploratory status and stadium construction.
The university's athletic trajectory is marked by a significant transition in 2003. Following an advisory student vote in November 2002—where 4,638 voters approved a $183 annual fee increase—Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef announced the move to Division I on March 11, 2003. This move was later solidified on July 1, 2007. To prepare for a major shift in 2026, the university launched 'Aggie Ascent,' a $265 million plan to upgrade facilities to meet Mountain West and potential FBS standards, featuring a $50 million expansion of UC Davis Health Stadium.
