The lightweight high school sophomore who became a football legend
In short: In 1970, coaches thought 147-pound Anthony Dorsett was too small for running back. They were wrong. From a small Pennsylvania town to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, discover the incredible rise of one of the greatest players to ever touch the ball.
Before he was a household name, Tony Dorsett was a defensive cornerback in Pennsylvania. His coaches initially resisted moving him to running back due to his light weight, but a 75-yard touchdown on a screen pass in 1971 changed everything. By his senior year, he was an All-state selection, having rushed for over 2,200 yards in a single high school career.
His ascent continued at the University of Pittsburgh, where he became a historic force. Dorsett was the first player in NCAA history to rush for at least 1,000 yards in each of his four collegiate seasons. In 1976, following a massive 1,948-yard senior season, he earned the Heisman Trophy. He also set records for the most 100-yard rushing performances in both a single season and a career, though those specific marks have since been surpassed.
Dorsett transitioned seamlessly to the NFL, drafted second overall by the Dallas Cowboys in 1977. He earned the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award that same season and helped lead the team to a Super Bowl victory. Over a 12-year career, including a final season with the Denver Broncos in 1988, he amassed 16,293 total yards and 90 touchdowns. At the time of his retirement, he stood as the NFL's second all-time leading rusher with 12,739 yards.
His legacy is cemented in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which inducted him in 1994, alongside the College Football Hall of Fame. Even his name carries a piece of marketing history; the University of Pittsburgh athletic department once encouraged him to use the name 'Tony' to capitalize on the catchy 'TD' initials.
