From minor league coach to Diamondbacks leader: the ascent of Torey Lovullo
In short: Before managing in the Major Leagues, Torey Lovullo spent years navigating the complex hierarchies of professional baseball. His journey from a standout UCLA All-American to a championship-winning manager is a masterclass in persistence, fueled by strategic coaching roles and a pivotal association with manager John Farrell.
Torey Lovullo's professional trajectory is defined by steady progression through the ranks of Major League Baseball. After a playing career that included seven MLB teams and a stint in Japan with the Yakult Swallows in 2000, Lovullo transitioned into coaching. His managerial foundation was built in the Cleveland Indians' farm system, where he achieved significant success, including leading the Akron Aeros to an Eastern League championship in 2005 and earning Manager of the Year honors in both the Carolina and Eastern Leagues.
A defining element of Lovullo's career was his professional relationship with John Farrell. After working together in the Cleveland organization, the two collaborated in the Toronto Blue Jays' coaching staff and later with the Boston Red Sox. In 2015, Lovullo stepped in as the Red Sox's interim manager for seven weeks while Farrell underwent treatment for Stage 1 lymphoma. During this period, the team saw a notable performance surge, posting a 28–20 record under his leadership.
Lovullo's appointment as manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2016 by Mike Hazen marked a major turning point. In his first season, he guided the team to the postseason and was named the 2017 NL Manager of the Year. Since then, he has become a cornerstone of the franchise, achieving milestones such as becoming the fastest manager in Diamondbacks history to reach 100 wins and eventually surpassing Kirk Gibson as the winningest manager in the team's history.
