How a nomadic hockey franchise finally found its permanent home in the city of Toronto
In short: The Toronto Marlies are a professional success story, but their roots lie in a wandering franchise that spent decades moving across Atlantic Canada and Ontario. Today, they serve as a vital pipeline for the Maple Leafs, bridging the gap between minor league development and the high-stakes world of the NHL.
The franchise began in 1978 as the New Brunswick Hawks, a joint venture between the Chicago Black Hawks and the Toronto Maple Leafs. This team was the first professional hockey club in New Brunswick, but it was only the start of a long, restless journey. Over the next two decades, the organization relocated to St. Catharines, Newmarket, and eventually St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. By the early 2000s, the team was the last remaining AHL club in the region, facing extreme travel costs that saw them flying over 1,700 kilometers to reach their nearest opponent.
The shift to Toronto in 2005 was driven by a strategic need for geographic proximity. NHL organizations increasingly prioritized placing their farm teams near their parent clubs to streamline player movement. With the Coca-Cola Coliseum—then known as the Ricoh Coliseum—recently renovated, the Maple Leafs moved their affiliate home. They rebranded the team as the Marlies, honoring the historic Toronto Marlboros, a junior team that had shared ownership with the Leafs for over six decades. To avoid confusion with a cigarette brand of the same name, the club adopted the shortened nickname.
Since arriving in Toronto, the Marlies have become a competitive force. In 2018, they secured their first Calder Cup championship, marking the first professional hockey title for a team based in Toronto since 1967. The franchise has also served as a training ground for coaching talent, most notably Sheldon Keefe, who led the team to its highest winning percentage before his promotion to the NHL. Today, the Marlies remain a cornerstone of Toronto hockey, balancing the development of future stars with the pursuit of league dominance.
