From NFL Pro Bowl running back to federal prison for financing a drug ring
In short: Travis Henry was a standout NFL running back who once rushed for over 1,400 yards in a single season. Yet, his professional trajectory was marked by substance abuse suspensions and a dramatic legal downfall, culminating in a federal prison sentence for his role in a cocaine trafficking operation.
Travis Henry’s athletic career began with immense promise. A standout at the University of Tennessee, he was part of the 1998 National Championship team and later became a second-round pick for the Buffalo Bills in the 2001 NFL draft. By 2002, he was a Pro Bowl selection, rushing for 1,438 yards and 13 touchdowns. His physical toughness earned him the nickname "Cheese" from his college strength coach, who compared his durability to a block of government cheese.
Despite his on-field success, Henry’s career was frequently derailed by off-field controversy. He faced multiple suspensions for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, including a high-profile 2007 case involving a positive marijuana test that he successfully appealed. However, his legal troubles escalated significantly after his release from the Denver Broncos in 2008. In September of that year, he was arrested by the DEA and accused of acting as the financier for a cocaine trafficking ring in Colorado.
In 2009, Henry pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute. He was sentenced to three years in federal prison, though the judge waived a potential $4 million fine due to his inability to pay. His personal life was similarly complex; he faced ongoing challenges regarding child support payments for his at least 11 children, with legal obligations estimated at $170,000 annually. Following his release from prison, Henry was eventually pardoned by President Donald Trump in February 2026.
