How a standout Combine performance propelled Travon Walker to the top pick
In short: Before the NFL Combine, analysts projected Travon Walker to be selected between tenth and fifteenth in the first round. However, an impressive physical performance shifted the narrative, leading experts like Mel Kiper Jr. to predict he would be the first overall selection in the 2022 NFL draft.
Born on December 18, 2000, in Thomaston, Georgia, Travon Walker followed a rapid trajectory from high school standout to professional star. After attending Upson-Lee High School and being selected for the 2019 All-American Bowl, he committed to the University of Georgia. His collegiate career was marked by steady development, moving from a freshman season in 2019—where he recorded 15 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 12 games—to a junior season as a defensive tackle that culminated in a 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship victory.
The transition to the professional level was swift. Following his championship run, Walker entered the 2022 NFL draft, where the Jacksonville Jaguars selected him first overall. This selection was secured after his performance at the NFL Combine significantly boosted his draft stock. On May 12, 2022, he signed a four-year rookie contract valued at $37.4 million, which was fully guaranteed.
Walker's impact on the field was immediate. In his rookie season, he started 14 of 15 games and recorded 3.5 sacks and 49 total tackles. His sophomore professional season in 2023 saw a massive statistical leap, finishing with 10 sacks, 52 tackles, and a fumble recovery. Despite facing setbacks, such as undergoing left wrist surgery on September 29, Walker has remained a cornerstone for the Jaguars. On April 3, 2026, the team solidified his future by signing him to a four-year, $110 million extension that keeps him with the franchise through the 2030 season.
