The defensive star who pivoted from wide receiver to NFL elite
In short: In 2016, Tre'Davious White faced a difficult choice at LSU. To avoid being buried on a roster of future stars, he switched positions. That single decision transformed a promising recruit into the highest-paid defensive back in the league and a perennial Pro Bowl talent.
Tre'Davious White's path to the NFL was defined by strategic adaptation. Originally committed to LSU as a wide receiver, White realized that playing on a roster featuring future NFL talents like Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry would limit his opportunities. He pivoted to defensive back, a move that yielded immediate results. By his junior year, he wore the No. 18 jersey, a symbol of leadership at LSU, and earned All-SEC second team honors. Before his collegiate shift, he was a standout at Green Oaks High School in Shreveport, where he played both quarterback and cornerback. His talent was recognized early, as he entered the college ranks as a five-star recruit and the 18th best overall player in his class.
His professional ascent was rapid. Selected 27th overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 2017 NFL draft, White entered a defensive unit in transition. He quickly established himself as a premier cornerback, earning two Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro honors. His dominance was statistically evident in 2019, when he recorded a career-high six interceptions and did not allow a single touchdown reception throughout the entire season. His impact was felt immediately upon entering the professional ranks. After securing his initial interception against Denver, he earned the NFL's September Defensive Rookie of the Month award during his debut year.
However, his career has been a battle against physical adversity. After a devastating ACL tear in 2021, White faced a period of sedentary recovery and depression. He eventually returned to the field, but subsequent injuries, including a torn Achilles tendon in 2023, led to his release from Buffalo in March 2024. Despite stints with the Los Angeles Rams and Baltimore Ravens, White's journey remains a testament to resilience, marked by a return to the Bills in 2025. The physical toll of his career was immense. Following his ACL injury, he spent time on the physically unable to perform list during the 2022 season. Even after his release from Buffalo, he found opportunities with the Rams and later the Ravens before his eventual homecoming.
