In short: In 2012, he was hailed as the premier running back prospect in the nation. Yet, within five seasons, the player once compared to legends like Adrian Peterson and Earl Campbell became a cautionary tale of professional football's volatility.

Trent Richardson’s ascent was nothing short of meteoric. A standout at Escambia High School in Florida, he recorded 2,100 yards and 25 touchdowns in his senior season. By the time he reached the University of Alabama, he was a powerhouse. During his junior year, Richardson set an SEC record with 21 rushing touchdowns and broke the school record with 1,679 rushing yards, earning the Doak Walker Award and finishing third in Heisman Trophy voting.

The expectations for his professional career were immense. Selected third overall in the 2012 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns, Richardson signed a fully guaranteed four-year, $20.4 million contract. Analysts viewed him as a 'sure-thing' player. However, his time in the NFL was marked by declining production and instability. After a season with the Browns where he averaged a low 3.6 yards per carry, he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in 2013 for a first-round pick.

His tenure in Indianapolis saw further struggles, including a demotion and a suspension for missing a walk-through during the AFC Championship game. After stints with the Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Ravens, Richardson’s career took him to the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, though personal legal complexities regarding his children prevented him from playing in Canada. He later found brief success in the short-lived Alliance of American Football, leading the league with 12 touchdowns in 2019, before moving to the Mexican FAM league in 2021.
