In short: In 2007, the Oakland Raiders used the first overall NFL draft pick on JaMarcus Russell. Despite his immense physical talent and a massive six-year contract, his tenure was defined by inconsistency and weight issues, ultimately making him one of the league's most notorious draft busts.

JaMarcus Russell arrived in the NFL with immense hype. After a stellar collegiate career at Louisiana State University (LSU), where he won the 2006 Manning Award and was the 2007 Sugar Bowl MVP, he was selected first overall by the Oakland Raiders in the 2007 NFL draft. His physical profile was ideal; scouts noted a rare combination of size and arm strength that made him a highly coveted prospect.

However, his professional career was marked by significant challenges. His tenure in Oakland was characterized by inconsistent performance and ongoing questions regarding his work ethic and conditioning. By 2010, reports surfaced regarding his weight, with some sources noting he arrived at mini-camp at 290 pounds, up from 271, and others reporting him at 300 pounds. This struggle with conditioning became a central theme of his short career.

The financial and professional fallout was substantial. After failing to reach a contract agreement initially, Russell signed a six-year deal worth up to $68 million, including $31.5 million guaranteed. The Raiders eventually released him in May 2010. The departure led to a legal battle: the Raiders sought $9.55 million in salary advances, while Russell filed a grievance for an additional $9 million. In 2013, the parties resolved the conflict through a $3 million supplemental payment from the Raiders to Russell.

Russell's legacy remains a cautionary tale in professional football. Despite his ability to lead LSU to a 10–1 regular season record and a top five ranking in 2005, he was unable to meet the immense expectations placed upon him as a number-one overall pick.
