How the MLB's slowest pitcher dominates with a release point below the knee
In short: In a league defined by triple-digit velocity, Tyler Rogers thrives by doing the exact opposite. By utilizing an extreme submarine motion, he maintains the lowest release point in Major League Baseball, proving that precision and unconventional movement can overpower even the most powerful hitters.
Tyler Rogers has carved out a unique niche in professional baseball through his submarine-style pitching. Unlike the high-velocity overhand delivery common in the modern era, Rogers employs an extreme sidearm motion where the ball is released at just 1.33 feet—the lowest point in the MLB. This unconventional mechanics-driven approach relies on deception and movement rather than raw speed; in 2019, his four-seam fastball averaged just 83.1 mph, and his sinker was even slower at 82.2 mph.
The effectiveness of this low-angle approach is reflected in his ability to suppress hard contact. During the 2021 season with the San Francisco Giants, Rogers achieved a 2.22 ERA and a 2.0% barrel rate, which was the lowest in the league. His ability to limit damage continued into 2025, when he led all of MLB in games pitched with 81 appearances, posting a 1.98 ERA and maintaining the lowest walk and barrel rates in the major leagues.
Rogers' career has also been marked by remarkable family connections. He is a mirror-image twin to Taylor Rogers, who is 30 seconds older. On August 27, 2019, the brothers made history as the tenth set of twins to play in the MLB. They later became only the fifth set of twins to appear in the same MLB game, a feat achieved on April 11, 2022, when they faced each other as opponents.
