The musical collective that treats albums like cinematic soundtracks
In short: Founded in 1992, Unkle is less a traditional band and more a revolving door of legends. From Radiohead’s Thom Yorke to Metallica’s Jason Newsted, this British project blends trip hop and electronic textures to create immersive, often visual, musical experiences.
The origins of Unkle trace back to 1992, when James Lavelle began the project, initially releasing remixes under the name 'Men from U.N.K.L.E.' alongside collaborators like Masayuki Kudo and Toshio Nakanishi. While early works were categorized as trip hop, the project's DNA is defined by constant reinvention and a massive roster of guest talent.
A pivotal moment occurred when Lavelle recruited producer DJ Shadow for the debut album, Psyence Fiction. Although the group had previously recorded material, Lavelle chose to discard it entirely to work with Shadow. Released in 1998, the album featured an extraordinary lineup, including Mark Hollis of Talk Talk, Mike D of the Beastie Boys, and Richard Ashcroft of The Verve. This era also saw the group experiment with live deconstruction, notably when the Scratch Perverts used five turntables to rework the album's tracks in 1999.
As the project evolved, it moved toward more electronic and cinematic directions. Under the moniker Unklesounds, the group explored techy breakbeat styles in 2001. Later albums, such as 2008's End Titles... Stories for Film, were described by Lavelle himself not as standard albums, but as music inspired by the moving image. This preoccupation with film continued through collaborations on soundtracks for projects like the Netflix film Roma and the game God of Light.
Despite the departure of key collaborators like Rich File in 2008, Unkle has maintained a prolific presence. The group's history is marked by a unique ability to bridge genres, pulling from heavy metal, hip hop, and indie rock to sustain a sonic identity that remains difficult to pin down to a single genre.
