In short: Born in Thrissur and raised in Ahmedabad, Unni Mukundan has transformed from a supporting actor into a powerhouse of Malayalam cinema. After a breakthrough in 2012, he expanded his reach into production and singing, eventually reaching the prestigious milestone of his first 100 crore box-office hit.

Unni Mukundan, born Unnikrishnan Mukundan Nair on 22 September 1987, began his cinematic journey with the 2011 Tamil film Seedan. While his early career involved various small and supporting roles, his trajectory shifted significantly with the 2012 action comedy Mallu Singh, which became a major hit and ran for over 100 days. This success established him within the Malayalam film industry, where he has since become a prominent figure. He first appeared in the industry alongside Mammootty in Bombay March 12. This early performance earned him several newcomer awards from various organisations.

His versatility is evidenced by his expansion into different creative disciplines. In 2017, he debuted as a lyricist and singer in the film Achayans. He also ventured into film production, launching Unni Mukundan Films (UMF) on 17 August 2020. The strategy yielded great results; his initial production, Meppadiyan, debuted in early 2022, earning him a National Film Award for producing in 2021. Beyond these creative roles, he has also worked in the corporate sector with Motif. He is also a known supporter of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In recent years, Mukundan has achieved significant commercial milestones. His 2024 film Marco, a spin-off of his character from the 2019 film Mikhael, emerged as a massive box-office success, marking his first film to cross the 100 crore threshold. This achievement, alongside other hits like Malikappuram, has solidified his reputation as a highly bankable artist in the industry. His recent success includes the Tamil film Garudan, where he played a negative role. He has also appeared in several Telugu productions.
