How a London musical collective evolved from trip hop into a diverse artistic force
In short: Formed in 1994, Archive has spent over three decades defying genre boundaries. From their early trip hop roots to psychedelic and progressive rock, the band has survived lineup changes and creative disputes to become a collaborative collective that refuses to be defined by a single sound.
The history of Archive is defined by constant reinvention and shifting personnel. Founded in 1994 by Darius Keeler and Danny Griffiths alongside Roya Arab and Rosko John, the group initially focused on trip hop. However, internal disputes led to a breakup in early 1996, only for the band to reform months later to record their debut album, Londinium, which was released on Island Records in September 1996.
The band's sonic identity has undergone several major transformations. While their early work leaned into dark electronica and symphonic trip hop, the era between 2002 and 2005—featuring vocalist Craig Walker—saw them move toward psychedelic and progressive styles. This period included the 2003 soundtrack for the French film Michel Vaillant. By 2006, following the arrival of Pollard Berrier, the group transitioned from a 'front-man-band' into a 'collective' of individual artists, a structure that remains central to their identity.
This collaborative approach has yielded significant commercial and critical success across Europe. Their 2009 release, 'Controlling Crowds I-III', reached number one on the French charts and number one in Greece. The band has continued to expand their reach, recently releasing their thirteenth studio album, Glass Minds, in early 2026. This latest work, produced by the band and Jérôme Devoise, continues to blend various styles, from electro-pop to melancholic downtempo rhythms, proving the enduring versatility of their collective sound.
