How a single invention enabled the rise of the modern skyscraper
In short: While primitive lifting devices have existed for millennia, the invention of safe passenger elevators changed everything. This video explores how this breakthrough allowed cities to grow vertically, fundamentally altering the architecture of our urban landscapes.
The history of the elevator is a journey from ancient lifting mechanisms to the sophisticated technology required for modern urban living. While versions of these devices have been used for thousands of years, the development of elevators safe enough for human passengers is a relatively recent achievement.
This technological evolution was the essential catalyst for the skyscraper era. Without the ability to move people safely and reliably to high altitudes, the vertical expansion of cities would have remained impossible.
