The Cold War radar station that trembled with every wave

US Air Force Tragedy at Texas Tower 4 · 10:21 · Video: The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered · Watch at the source

In short: In 1961, a massive Air Force radar tower off the coast of New York collapsed during a winter storm, claiming 28 lives. Known as "Old Shaky," the structure was so unstable that visitors were once warned not to shave with straight razors for fear of a sudden lurch.

The tragedy centered on Texas Tower No. 4, a $21 million radar station erected by the United States Air Force in 1957. Located approximately 80 miles southeast of New York City in the North Atlantic, the facility was designed to monitor the coast during the Cold War. However, from its inception, the tower suffered from severe stability problems. Even minor movements from the ocean waters below caused the massive structure to tremble, earning it the nickname "Old Shaky."

The disaster occurred in January 1961 when a fierce winter storm struck the hurricane-weakened station. The collapse resulted in the deaths of 28 men—both service members and civilians. The Preparedness Investigating Subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Armed Services later uncovered a continuous sequence of blunders and poor decisions concerning how the tower was built, maintained, designed, and managed.

The incident remains a significant piece of forgotten Cold War history. During congressional hearings, Senator John Stennis emphasized that those lost at the station deserved the same recognition as soldiers who died in actual combat, describing the site as a "battle station." The tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the human cost associated with the technological demands of early aerospace defense.

The Texas Tower Association continues to preserve the memory of these casualties. While many of these deaths were overshadowed by active warfare, the loss of 28 patriots in a structural failure remains a pivotal moment in American military history.
