In short: In January 2019, a lone woman stood outside the Parliament of Uganda, protesting climate inaction. Inspired by Greta Thunberg, Vanessa Nakate’s solitary strike sparked a global movement, transforming her from a single protester into a leading voice for climate justice and African representation.

Vanessa Nakate's activism began in response to the unusually high temperatures in Uganda, a concern she first expressed in December 2018. Following the lead of Greta Thunberg, Nakate initiated a solitary strike in January 2019 outside the Parliament of Uganda. What started as a lonely protest eventually grew into the Rise Up Movement and Youth for Future Africa as social media helped spread her message regarding the plight of the Congolian rainforests.

Nakate’s advocacy links environmental crisis to systemic inequality. She argues that climate change is a 'nightmare' that exacerbates poverty, hunger, and conflict, specifically noting that in Uganda, a lack of rain leads to starvation and death for the most vulnerable. She has been a vocal critic of the media; in January 2020, the Associated Press cropped her out of a photo featuring Greta Thunberg, an incident Nakate identified as a racist attitude that ultimately drew more attention to African activists.

Beyond protest, Nakate focuses on practical solutions and policy. Through her Green Schools Project, she works to transition Ugandan schools to solar energy and install eco-friendly stoves, a project that has reached thirty schools. Her influence has been recognized globally, from being named a TIME100 Next honoree to serving as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and a board member for the Malala Fund. She continues to advocate for 'loss and damage' compensation for African communities suffering from emissions produced by wealthier nations.
