Why the front lines of climate change must enter the rooms of power
In short: Uganda faces a brutal reality of landslides, flooding, and prolonged droughts. Yet, the voices most affected by these shifts are often excluded from the high-level negotiations that decide the continent's future. Activist Vanessa Nakate argues that solving this crisis requires more than just protest; it requires a fundamental systemic shift.
For Vanessa Nakate, the climate crisis is not an abstract policy debate but a lived reality in Uganda. As a nation heavily dependent on agriculture, the country faces devastating consequences from shifting weather patterns, including heavy rains and long droughts that lead to failed harvests and destroyed livelihoods. These environmental pressures, alongside landslides and flooding, have driven Nakate from street-level mobilization to the pursuit of formal policy expertise.
Nakate’s journey began in 2019 when she became Uganda’s first Fridays for Future striker, inspired by the movement started by Greta Thunberg in Sweden. While her early work focused on grassroots initiatives—such as the Rise Up Movement, the Vash Green Schools Project, and solar panel installations—she recognized a critical gap in the global response. She contends that wealthy, high-emission countries ought to fund African climate initiatives to speed up sustainable development, remarking that the current system is incapable of fixing the crises it helped generate.
To bridge the gap between activism and influence, Nakate transitioned to academia, enrolling in the Master of Public Policy (MPP) at Oxford as a Weidenfeld-Hoffmann scholar. This move was driven by a mission to gain the technical language and legal knowledge necessary to impact climate policy in decision-making arenas. By studying modules such as international law under supervisors like Professor Thomas Hale, she seeks to use the mechanics of global law to articulate and drive climate justice.
