How a school dropout built the world's most sophisticated and lethal insurgent organization
In short: Velupillai Prabhakaran founded the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 1976, transforming a small militant group into a formidable, highly organized insurgency. Driven by a quest for an independent state, his forces pioneered suicide tactics and global fundraising, leaving a legacy that remains a study in modern revolutionary warfare.
Born in 1954 in Valvettithurai, Velupillai Prabhakaran emerged from a background of growing Tamil nationalism in Sri Lanka. By 1972, he had founded the Tamil New Tigers, which he renamed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 1976. His movement sought to establish an independent state called Eelam in the north and east of the country, reacting to perceived discrimination by the Sinhalese-dominated government. By 1985, the LTTE held control over Jaffna and much of the surrounding peninsula.
The organization became notorious for its rigid discipline and advanced tactics. Prabhakaran established the 'Black Tigers,' an elite unit dedicated to suicide attacks, including the 1991 assassination of Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and the 1996 bombing of the central bank in Colombo. To maintain its operations, the LTTE utilized a complex financial network involving extortion, drug smuggling, and voluntary contributions from the Tamil diaspora. Fighters were famously known for carrying cyanide capsules to avoid capture, a practice reflecting Prabhakaran's own vow to die in honor rather than surrender.
The conflict spanned decades, marked by shifting alliances and broken ceasefires. After the Indian Peace-Keeping Force withdrew in 1990, the LTTE regained strength, though it faced increasing international isolation, eventually being designated a terrorist organization by the European Union in 2006. The Sri Lankan government launched a final, decisive offensive in 2008. By May 2009, the military had cornered the remaining leadership on the northeast coast. Prabhakaran was killed during the final firefight, effectively ending the armed conflict that had claimed an estimated 70,000 to 80,000 lives since the early 1980s.
