The merchant seaman who became a martyr for Tamil nationalism
In short: From commanding Maldivian ships to leading a political movement, Ariyanayagam Chandranehru’s life was defined by a radical shift in ideology. His journey from a follower of non-violent civil rights to a supporter of armed struggle highlights the intense pressures that shaped Sri Lankan history.
A. Chandranehru was born in 1944 in south-eastern Ceylon, named after two iconic Indian independence activists: Subhas Chandra Bose and Jawaharlal Nehru. His father, K. A. W. Ariyanayagam, was a founder of the Federal Party and a proponent of the non-violent 'Gandhiyam' way of life. Growing up in this environment, Chandranehru initially participated in peaceful satyagrahas during the 1950s and 1960s.
His trajectory shifted significantly after he began working as a merchant seaman, eventually becoming a ship captain. During a mid-1980s vacation, his arrest under the Prevention of Terrorism Act led to a year-long stay in Boosa prison, marking a crucial shift. This period of incarceration, like that of many young Tamils of his generation, led him to abandon non-violence in favor of supporting a militant armed struggle for a separate Tamil state.
By the late 1990s, Chandranehru had transitioned into business before entering formal politics. He was elected to Parliament in 2001 as a candidate for the Tamil National Alliance. His life ended in a violent assassination on February 7, 2005. While traveling in a van with members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), he was intercepted and shot by men in military uniforms in government-controlled territory. The attack, blamed on the military and the Karuna paramilitary group, left him mortally wounded. Following his death, the LTTE conferred upon him the title Maamanithar, meaning 'great human being.'
