In short: Born the eldest child of King Carl XVI Gustav, Victoria was briefly displaced as heir by her younger brother. A landmark constitutional amendment in 1980 restored her position, setting the stage for her to become the first reigning queen of the Bernadotte dynasty and a modern symbol of the Swedish state.

Crown Princess Victoria was born on July 14, 1977, as the first child of King Carl XVI Gustav and Queen Silvia. Although she was the monarch's eldest child, the Swedish system of succession at the time favored male heirs. Consequently, when her brother, Prince Carl Philip, was born in 1979, he became the heir apparent. This arrangement was short-lived; in 1980, Sweden implemented a constitutional amendment to the 1810 Act of Succession, adopting absolute primogeniture. This change ensured that the monarch's oldest child would inherit the throne regardless of gender, officially establishing Victoria as the Crown Princess.

To prepare for her future role as head of state, Victoria underwent an extensive and rigorous education. After graduating from secondary school in 1996, she studied French at the Université Catholique de l’Ouest in France and later pursued political science and history at Yale University in the United States. Her training extended into the professional and military spheres, including internships at the United Nations, the Swedish embassy in Washington, D.C., and the Swedish government offices. She also completed military basic training at the Swedish Armed Forces International Centre and participated in the Swedish foreign ministry's diplomat program.

Victoria’s personal life also drew significant public attention, particularly her relationship with Daniel Westling, a fitness entrepreneur and her former personal trainer. The couple announced their engagement in February 2009 and married in Stockholm’s Cathedral of St. Nicholas on June 19, 2010. They have two children, Princess Estelle, born in 2012, and Prince Oscar, born in 2016. As she continues her preparation for the throne, including ongoing officer training at the Swedish Defence University, Victoria remains a central figure in the House of Bernadotte, the royal family that has held the Swedish throne since 1818.
