From Israeli birth to La Liga star: the rise of Viktor Tsyhankov
In short: Born in Israel to a professional footballer, Viktor Tsyhankov has become a vital creative force in European football. From his early days in the Dynamo Kyiv academy to driving Girona to a historic Champions League spot, his technical versatility and vision have made him one of Ukraine's most significant modern talents.
Tsyhankov's journey began in Nahariya, Israel, before his family returned to Vinnytsia, Ukraine. After developing at the Nyva Vinnytsia academy, he moved to the Dynamo Kyiv academy in 2011 at age 13. He quickly ascended through the ranks, making his senior debut in the Ukrainian Premier League in August 2016 and scoring in the UEFA Champions League just weeks later.
During his seven seasons with Dynamo Kyiv, Tsyhankov became a central playmaker, amassing 236 appearances and 94 goals. His 2018–19 campaign was particularly notable, as he scored 18 league goals and was named the Ukrainian Premier League Player of the Season. He was also a key component of the squad that secured a domestic treble under manager Mircea Lucescu during the 2020–21 season.
In 2023, Tsyhankov transitioned to La Liga with Girona for a reported €5 million fee. He became an essential figure for the Catalan side, particularly during the 2023–24 season when he helped the club achieve a historic third-place finish and Champions League qualification. His ability to create chances was elite; in La Liga, he ranked third among right wingers for chances created, with 55 total, trailing only Lamine Yamal and Antony.
Now playing for Ajax under manager Míchel, Tsyhankov continues to showcase the tactical flexibility that defines his game. Whether operating as an inverted winger, an attacking midfielder, or a centre-forward, his left foot remains a potent tool for both long-distance shooting and precise through balls.
