The sisters who turned sibling harmony into a platinum legacy
In short: Vika and Linda Bull didn't just find their voices in the studio; they were forged in the Tongan church. From backing vocals in blues-rock bands to a 2020 chart-topping debut, their journey is a masterclass in how cultural heritage and sibling chemistry can build a musical empire.
Born in 1966 and 1967 respectively, Vika and Linda Bull grew up in an environment where music was a communal pillar. Their mother, a nursing student from Tonga who arrived in Australia in 1959, served as their primary vocal coach. She specifically assigned their roles based on their natural ranges: Linda took the low parts while Vika took the high parts. This foundation of harmony was reinforced by their regular performances at dinner dances and their local Tongan church, where they were immersed in traditional singing and dancing.
The sisters' professional path was non-linear. While Vika initially pursued training as a legal secretary and Linda entered university, both worked at the Black Cat Cafe in Fitzroy. Vika eventually broke into the industry as a receptionist at Platinum Studios, landing a backing vocal gig when a performer lost her voice. They gained significant experience in the late 1980s and early 1990s as backing vocalists for the blues-rock group The Black Sorrows. During this era, Joe Camilleri famously distinguished their styles, describing Vika as 'strong and soulful' and Linda as 'soft and gentle.'
In 1994, the duo launched their independent career with a self-titled album that achieved platinum status. Their discography reflects a rich tapestry of influences, from Aretha Franklin and Dolly Parton to gospel and country-blues. Over three decades, they have navigated independent releases, live residencies, and high-profile collaborations with artists like Iggy Pop and Paul Kelly. Their enduring impact was formally recognized in 2022 with the Order of Australia Medal and their 2026 induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame.
