The rise and rapid contraction of a celebrity burger empire
In short: Wahlburgers transformed the brothers Wahlberg from Hollywood icons into restaurateurs, leveraging a reality TV hit to build a global footprint. However, the brand's journey from over 100 locations to a fraction of that size reveals the volatile reality of scaling a celebrity brand across diverse markets.
The Wahlburgers brand was born from a licensing deal in 2011, where an equity group including Paul, Donnie, and Mark Wahlberg secured the name from Tom Wahl. While the brothers were already established in the food industry through their restaurant Alma Nove—named for their mother and her nine children—Wahlburgers became a distinct entity. The brand gained massive public visibility through a reality television series on A&E that debuted in 2014, which even earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program.
The company pursued an aggressive expansion strategy, aiming for international reach and retail integration. Seeking to launch 100 outlets across China and nearby areas via a 2017 partnership, they also collaborated with retailers such as Hy-Vee and Meijer to stock burgers in supermarkets. They even attempted to enter the German market with a location at Ramstein Air Base in 2020. However, many of these ambitious moves faced significant hurdles, including a failed Asian expansion and various local closures due to health code violations or financial issues.
The brand's scale has seen a dramatic correction in recent years. From a peak of 109 locations in 2023, the chain was reduced to approximately 32 locations globally by July 2025. A major factor in this contraction was the closure of 79 locations tied to the Hy-Vee partnership in early 2025. The brand's trajectory serves as a case study in the complexities of balancing celebrity branding with the logistical demands of large-scale franchise management and international logistics.
