From New Jersey school lunchrooms to the heights of culinary television stardom
In short: Before he was a fixture of reality TV, Tom Colicchio was a line chef in Manhattan. The journey from a union organizer's son to a five-time James Beard Award winner involves high-stakes restaurant openings, iconic New York institutions, and a deep commitment to food policy.
Born in 1962 in Elizabeth, New and Jersey, Tom Colicchio’s culinary trajectory began far from the bright lights of television. The son of a union organizer and a school lunchroom worker, Colicchio climbed the ranks of the New York dining scene through rigorous roles. His early professional years included stints as a line chef and sous-chef at The Quilted Giraffe, and later, serving as a sous-chef to the renowned Thomas Keller at Manhattan's Rakel during the mid-1980s.
In July 1994, Colicchio reached a major milestone by co-founding the Gramercy Tavern alongside partner Danny Meyer. The restaurant became a cornerstone of New York dining, earning the title of Most Popular Restaurant in New York City via the Zagat Survey in both 2003 and 2005. While he eventually sold his interest in the establishment in 2006, his influence on the city's gastronomic landscape continued through the launch of Crafted Hospitality and various ventures like Craft, which opened in 2001.
Beyond the kitchen, Colicchio has become a powerful voice in food politics and media. Since Top Chef premiered on Bravo in 2006, he has led the judging panel, winning a 2010 Emmy for Outstanding Reality-Competition Programming. He also promotes food security, holding positions on both the Food Council at City Harvest and the Food Bank for New York City's Culinary Council. Through his podcast, 'Citizen Chef,' launched in 2020, he continues to explore the intersection of food, policy, and citizenship.
