In short: Before leading the Florida Gators to a 2025 national championship, Walter Clayton Jr. was a dual-threat athlete. Once a highly recruited football prospect with offers from Notre Dame and Tennessee, he pivoted to basketball, eventually becoming the SEC Male Athlete of the Year and a first-round NBA draft pick.

Walter Clayton Jr.'s ascent was marked by significant collegiate transitions. After starting his career at Iona, where he was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Year as a sophomore, he transferred to the University of Florida. His impact at Florida was immediate and profound, helping the Gators reach the SEC Tournament Championship for the first time in a decade and the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three years. Before his collegiate success, he attended Lake Wales High School and later transferred to Bartow High School. During his time at Bartow, he helped the Yellow Jackets secure a state championship.

His senior season in 2025 stands as one of the most decorated in Florida basketball history. With a 27–4 regular-season tally, Clayton averaged 3.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 17.2 points. This success included historic victories over No. 1 Tennessee and No. 1 Auburn—the first time Florida had ever defeated a top-ranked opponent on the road. His performance culminated in a national championship victory, where he was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player (MOP). In addition to his scoring, he earned a spot as a first-team All-American in 2025. He also achieved the distinction of being named a first-team All-SEC selection.

Clayton's professional journey began on June 25, 2025, when he was selected 18th overall by the Washington Wizards. Following a trade, he joined the Utah Jazz, making his debut on October 22, 2025. By February 3, 2026, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in a multi-player deal involving Jaren Jackson Jr., marking his transition into the professional ranks of the NBA. His time with the Jazz included a career-high scoring performance of 20 points against Oklahoma City. He eventually moved to the Grizzlies in a significant trade involving several players.
