The rise of a defensive specialist from Georgia high school star to NBA mainstay
In short: From leading Woodward Academy to a state title to anchoring the Los Angeles Lakers, Walker Kessler’s ascent has been defined by an extraordinary ability to protect the rim. His journey through the ACC and SEC showcases a rare defensive dominance that reshaped NBA rosters.
Walker Kessler’s path to the NBA was marked by record-breaking defensive performances at every level. As a standout at Woodward Academy in Georgia, he earned several prestigious honors, including Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year and Mr. Georgia Basketball. His senior season was particularly dominant, where he averaged 5.2 blocks per game, helping his team secure its first Class 4A state title.
After a highly recruited collegiate career that included stints with the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Auburn Tigers, Kessler transitioned to the professional ranks. At Auburn, he established himself as a premier shot blocker, leading the nation in blocks and earning SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors. His ability to impact the game was evident in single-game feats, such as recording 11 blocks against LSU in December 2021.
The NBA draft process saw Kessler move through several organizations. Initially selected 22nd overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2022, he was soon involved in high-profile trades, most notably a massive deal to the Utah Jazz involving Rudy Gobert. During his time in Utah, he reached new heights, including a 25-rebound performance against the Toronto Raptors in March 2025.
Kessler's career reached a significant milestone on July 8, 2026, when he signed a four-year, $130 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. While his career has faced hurdles, such as a season-ending left shoulder surgery in late 2025, his impact as a defensive anchor remains a central part of his professional identity.
