The NFL's most prestigious award is a trophy of a lonely man
In short: The NFL Man of the Year isn't a trophy of a superstar in a jersey. It is a sculpture of an anonymous, caped lineman standing alone on the sidelines. It was designed to honor the quiet impact of players who serve their communities, regardless of their fame on the field.
The award was first established in 1969 by artist Daniel Bennett Schwartz. Unlike many sports trophies that celebrate a specific icon, this sculpture depicts an "undistinguished caped lineman" standing outside of the game's action. While offensive lineman Steve Wright served as the physical model for the piece, the league intentionally avoided making it look like any specific individual. The goal was to ensure the honor could apply to any player, specifically highlighting those in lower-profile positions whose humanitarian efforts deserve recognition.
The award underwent a significant symbolic shift in 1999. Following the death of Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton—who had won the award in 1977—the league renamed the honor to the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. This change cemented the trophy's purpose as a tribute to humanitarian legacy. Today, the selection process involves a panel including the NFL Commissioner, the previous year's winner, and several former players who choose one recipient from 32 nominees.
The financial impact of the award is substantial. The winner receives a $250,000 donation to a charity of their choice, while all 31 other finalists receive $50,000 donations in their name. Since 2017, active winners have been granted the right to wear a patch of the trophy on their uniforms for the remainder of their careers. While the Kansas City Chiefs, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Chicago Bears lead the history books with five winners each, the award remains the league's most prestigious accolade for community impact.
