In short: Ariana Grande’s 2024 hit "We Can't Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)" is more than a catchy electropop track. Inspired by the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the song and its music video explore the painful boundaries of romance and the desire to erase memories of a lost love.

Coming out on 8 March 2024 as the second single from Eternal Sunshine, her seventh studio album, this track fuses synth-pop, synthwave, Europop and synth-pop. While the lyrics outwardly detail the demise of a romantic relationship and the hope for a lover's return, they also carry a dual meaning. Observers suggest the song reflects Grande's complex relationship with the press and her choice to avoid the cyclical nature of public criticism. The track was co-written and co-produced by Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh. It was released through Republic Records.

The music video, directed by Christian Breslauer and filmed at California Polytechnic State University in Pomona, California, leans heavily into the sci-fi premise of memory removal. In the visual, Grande plays a character named Peaches who undergoes a procedure by 'Brighter Days Inc.' to erase her ex-boyfriend, portrayed by actor Evan Peters. The narrative uses surreal imagery—such as a teddy bear from an arcade and shifting bedroom decor—to illustrate the erasure of shared history. The production features distinctive chiptune flourishes and juddering synths. This creates a retro effect reminiscent of Robyn's music.

Commercially, the song proved to be a massive success, debuting at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Global 200. This achievement represents Grande's ninth US number-one hit and seventh career debut at the top, setting a record for female artists for most number-one debuts. The track's global reach was significant, reaching the top spot in 12 different countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates. The single achieved her fourth number-one on the Billboard Global 200. It also reached the top spot in several other nations like New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
