The rock band that embraced chaos to break their own formula
In short: When Weezer released their sixth studio album in 2008, they weren't just following a trend. They were intentionally dismantling their signature sound, incorporating everything from Southern rap to baroque counterpoint, all while navigating a mysterious fan-led internet hoax.
Following the platinum success of 2005's Make Believe, Weezer entered a period of significant transition. Frontman Rivers Cuomo returned to Harvard University to finish his degree, graduating as a Phi Beta Kappa member, while the band's recording process for the 'Red Album' became a fragmented, three-session endeavor. The production was a collaborative mix of the band's own efforts, legendary producer Rick Rubin, and Jacknife Lee, who was brought in by Geffen Records to bolster the album's commercial potential.
The resulting record was a departure from their established 'verse-chorus' structure. Cuomo sought to experiment with non-traditional forms, leading to tracks like 'The Greatest Man That Ever Lived,' which featured ten different musical styles, including piano, sirens, and rapping. This experimental spirit extended to the band's lineup; for the first time since their debut, all four members contributed lead vocals. This included bassist Scott Shriner, who led tracks like 'Cold Dark World' and the deluxe addition 'King.'
Despite the creative ambition, the era was marked by uncertainty. A fan-driven hoax website, albumsix.com, successfully deceived major outlets like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork by spreading false titles and release dates. While critics were divided—with some praising the 'wild, willing personality' of the record and others calling it a 'certifiable mess'—the album achieved a number four debut on the Billboard 200. It remains a pivotal moment of musical restlessness for a band refusing to rely on past successes.
