How a Twitter meme became a chart-topping surprise album
In short: In 2019, Weezer dropped a collection of 1980s covers with zero warning. Born from internet fan campaigns and Spotify data, the Teal Album bypassed traditional promotion to prove that even a 'joke' project can climb the Billboard charts.
The origins of Weezer's twelfth studio album, known as the Teal Album, lie in the unpredictable landscape of internet fandom. Following the release of their eleventh album, Pacific Daydream, fans launched a digital campaign to pressure the band into covering Toto's 'Africa.' After a playful attempt with the song 'Rosanna,' the band responded in May 2018 with a version of 'Africa' that reached number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart.
This momentum culminated in a surprise digital release on January 24, 2019. Frontman Rivers Cuomo utilized Spotify's most-played data to help curate the tracklist, which primarily featured 1980s hits. The release served as a precursor to their thirteenth studio album, which arrived just weeks later on March 1, 2019. To accompany the drop, the band released quirky promotional items, including a teal Velcro wallet and a teal Rubik's cube.
Critical reception was sharply divided. On Metacritic, the album holds a weighted average score of 58 out of 100. Some critics, like Matt Beaumont of NME, viewed the project as a clever satire of the covers album genre. Others were more biting; Tim Sommer suggested the album lacked any emotional depth, while Nick Flanagan compared the tracks to the 'paint-by-numbers' repertoire of a wedding band. Despite the polarized reviews, the album saw commercial success, peaking at number five on the Billboard 200 after debuting at number 47.
