In short: A master replication specialist at The British Museum demonstrates the ancient metalworking techniques used to reconstruct the Hawkedon Helmet. This project offers a rare look at how Roman armor was crafted and what the only gladiator helmet found in Britain likely looked like two millennia ago.

Michael Neilson, a replication specialist with 29 years of experience at The British Museum, led the reconstruction of the Hawkedon Helmet. By analyzing physical clues on the original artifact, Neilson utilized traditional Roman metalworking methods to recreate the piece as it may have appeared 2,000 years ago.

The project, supported by The Crucible Foundry, is featured in the 'Gladiators of Britain' exhibition. The original helmet and the new face guard are scheduled for display at the Grosvenor Museum in Chester starting 20 September, and later at Tullie, Carlisle, beginning 7 February 2026.
