The only piece of gladiatorial armour ever discovered in Roman Britain
In short: Tristan Hughes explores the British Museum's Gladiators of Britain exhibition, showcasing rare artifacts that offer a glimpse into life in the Roman province of Britannia nearly 2,000 years ago.
The exhibition features 25 items sourced from the British Museum and Colchester Museums, alongside local partners. Curators Dr. Anna Willi and Dr. Richard Hobbs highlight significant finds, including a 1st to 2nd-century AD bone figurine of a heavily armoured Murmillo gladiator found near Colchester.
Other notable artifacts include a rare coin depicting the Colosseum, a well-preserved gladiator-themed oil lamp, and the 1st-century AD Hawkedon Helmet. The latter is particularly significant as the only known example of gladiatorial armour recovered from Roman Britain.
