The hidden graveyard of aircraft beneath Lake Michigan's surface
In short: Discover how more than one hundred World War II planes ended up at the bottom of Lake Michigan, and the remarkable training mission that shaped the Pacific theater.
During the Second World War, the US Navy utilized two converted passenger steamers, the USS Wolverine and USS Sable, as makeshift aircraft carriers. These coal-fired, side-wheel vessels served as training grounds for over 15,000 carrier pilots. However, the difficulty of landing on the moving decks of these ships meant many aircraft failed to land safely, eventually sinking just off the Chicago shoreline.
