In short: Before the era of massive supercarriers, the US Navy was experimenting with wooden flight decks. Originally the collier USS Jupiter, this turbine-electric vessel was transformed into the USS Langley, a pioneering platform that would define the future of naval aviation and seaborne warfare.

The transformation of the USS Langley began with its previous life as the USS Jupiter, a Navy Fleet Collier No. 3. Launched in 1912, the ship was a technological marvel for its time, utilizing a turbo-electric drive designed by William Le Roy Emmet. This system, powered by a single Curtis turbine and alternator set, allowed the vessel to reach 14 knots. By 1920, the ship was decommissioned and underwent a radical conversion at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard to become the US Navy's first aircraft carrier, designated CV-1.

Langley served as a floating laboratory for naval aviation. In October 1922, Lieutenant Virgil C. Griffin achieved a milestone by piloting a Vought VE-7 off her full-length wooden deck. Shortly after, Lieutenant Commander Godfrey de Courcelles Chevalier performed the first carrier landing in an Aeromarine 39B. The ship also tested new launch methods, including a catapult launch by Commander Whiting in November 1922. These experiments were vital for developing the tactics used by later, larger carriers like the Lexington and Saratoga.

The ship's career eventually shifted from carrier to seaplane tender (AV-3) in 1937. During World War II, she faced a tragic end in the Pacific. On 27 February 1942, while transporting a cargo of 32 P-40 fighters to Java, Langley was targeted by nine Japanese twin-engine bombers from the 21st and 23rd naval air flotillas. The resulting damage was so severe that her escorts were forced to scuttle the vessel.
