The night a 60-minute wrestling match was forced to have a winner
In short: WrestleMania XII is remembered for its grueling main event: a first-of-its-kind Iron Man match. But when the clock hit zero and the score was tied, the rules were rewritten in real-time to ensure a champion emerged, creating one of the most controversial finishes in sports entertainment history.
The main event featured Bret Hart defending the WWF Championship against Shawn Michaels in a 60-minute Iron Man match. The stipulation dictated that the winner would be the man who secured the most falls within that hour. Michaels had earned the shot by winning the 1996 Royal Rumble and subsequently defeating Owen Hart at In Your House 6. The match was built on the narrative of Hart's desire to retain his title against a Michaels who had faced various setbacks, including a storyline concussion and a previous failure to win Diesel's championship at WrestleMania XI.
As the match reached its final moments, neither man had secured a fall. Hart applied his signature Sharpshooter hold, but the 60-minute time limit expired before Michaels could submit. Rules for 'sudden death' were ordered by Gorilla Monsoon, the WWF President, to be used by referee Earl Hebner during the match. Ring announcer Howard Finkel declared that 'there must be a winner!' This intervention allowed Michaels to secure the pinfall after hitting Hart with the 'Sweet Chin Music' twice, officially becoming the new champion.
The event was packed with high-concept storytelling and logistical pivots. It featured the return of Ultimate Warrior after a four-year hiatus to face Hunter Hearst Helmsley, and a 'Hollywood Backlot Brawl' between Roddy Piper and Goldust. Interestingly, the latter was originally intended to be a Miami Street Fight involving Razor Ramon, but was changed because Scott Hall refused to re-sign with the WWF. The promotion also notably abandoned plans for a celebrity match involving O.J. Simpson due to fears of public backlash and lost sponsorships.
