In short: Before the chaotic crossovers of Marvel vs. Capcom, there was X-Men: Children of the Atom. Released in 1994, this Capcom fighter introduced the high-speed, air-combo-heavy DNA that would define a generation of arcade classics. It was a technical marvel that pushed hardware to its absolute limits, for better and worse.

Released in December 1994 in Japan and early 1995 in North America, X-Men: Children of the Atom was Capcom’s first fighting game using a Marvel Comics license. Based on the 'Fatal Attractions' comic storyline, the game featured voice actors from the popular 1990s X-Men animated series. It set a new standard for the genre by introducing multi-tiered, destructible environments and a fast-paced combo system that allowed for mid-air attacks, features that would later become the foundation for the Marvel vs. Capcom series.

The game’s development was a technical challenge due to the massive memory requirements of its arcade hardware. While the original CP System II arcade version utilized 32 megabytes for character data, home consoles like the Sega Saturn and PlayStation had only 2 megabytes of RAM. This disparity forced developers to cut a third of the animation frames for the Saturn port. Despite these limitations, the Saturn version was widely praised as 'arcade perfect' by critics, whereas the later PlayStation release suffered from significant slowdown and missing frames.

Beyond its technical impact, the game is remembered for its unique features, such as the 'X-Power' gauge that allowed for special 'Hyper X' moves. It also included a secret appearance by Akuma from Street Fighter, a result of a contractual requirement to include a Street Fighter character. While the game’s roster was relatively small, its influence on the fighting game genre remains undeniable. It was recently brought back to modern audiences in the 2024 Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, marking its first home release since 1997.
