In short: In 1937, a group of Moroccan nationalists founded a club not just for sport, but to reclaim access to spaces denied to them by colonial authorities. What began as a way to bypass European-only swimming pools evolved into the most decorated football institution in Morocco.

During the French protectorate, many Moroccans were expelled from athletic clubs and swimming pools in Casablanca to prevent their numbers from increasing. In response, seven members of the national independence movement established Wydad Athletic Club on 8 May 1937. The club's name, meaning 'love' or 'sincere affection' in Arabic, was chosen during a period of intense political tension, intentionally omitting 'Casablanca' to signal that the club represented all Moroccans, not just city residents.

The club's early years were marked by institutional hurdles. The French authorities initially resisted the establishment of a 'full Moroccan club,' forcing founders like Hajj Mohamed Benjelloun Touimi to seek legal amendments through the Franco-Moroccan Association. Even after gaining recognition through the intervention of the General Resident, Maurice Nogues, the club faced systemic bias. In the early 1940s, a federation dominated by established clubs attempted to block Wydad's promotion to the first division by forcing an additional, suspicious match during the month of Ramadan against a team of non-Muslim foreigners.

Despite these obstacles, Wydad became a powerhouse. By the late 1940s, they achieved a historic 'triple' by winning the North African Cup, the North African Championship, and the Moroccan league in a single season. Following Morocco's independence, the club was honored with the 'Resistance Card' by King Mohammed V. Today, the club holds a record 22 Moroccan league titles and has achieved significant international success, including three CAF Champions League titles.
