In short: The lineage of the original WWE Women's Championship is a masterclass in corporate storytelling. While it technically dates back to 1956, the company selectively chooses which history to acknowledge—effectively erasing decades of competition to create a legendary, singular narrative for one of its most enduring icons.

The championship's history is defined by a unique editorial choice regarding lineage. WWE did not acknowledge this belt until 1984, following a rights sale by The Fabulous Moolah, despite her becoming the third NWA World Women's Champion on September 18, 1956. Because WWE refuses to recognize any title changes that occurred between 1956 and 1984—changes that are still recognized by the NWA—the company officially credits Moolah with a single, continuous reign lasting 28 years.

The belt's journey was marked by periods of inactivity and brand shifts. It sat vacant in 1990 after Rockin' Robin departed, only to be reactivated in 1993 via a tournament won by Alundra Blayze. However, the title became inactive again when Blayze unexpectedly signed with WCW in 1995, famously throwing her championship belt into a trash can during an episode of Monday Nitro. Jacqueline Moore beat Sable in 1998 to bring back the title during the Attitude Era.

The championship's status shifted significantly during the 2002 Brand Extension. Initially defended on both Raw and SmackDown, it became exclusive to Raw in September 2002 before moving to SmackDown in April 2009 following a draft involving Melina. The original title was eventually retired in September 2010 when it was unified with the Divas Championship. While a new championship was introduced in 2016, WWE explicitly states that this newer version does not carry the lineage of the original 1956 title.
