In short: Before she became a staple of the anime industry, Yuki Kajiura worked as a systems engineering programmer. Her transition from coding to composition highlights a unique creative trajectory, blending technical precision with a signature fusion of contemporary classical and electronic music.

Born in Tokyo in 1965, Kajiura’s musical foundation began in 1972 while accompanying her father on the piano. Her early life was marked by international movement; her family relocated to West Germany for her father's work. It was during this period of transition that she wrote her first composition, "Thank you, Good-bye," at the age of seven as a farewell to her grandmother.

After returning to Japan and graduating from college, Kajiura spent several years in the tech sector as a systems engineering programmer. It was not until 1992 that she pivoted to music full-time. This professional shift eventually led to her involvement with the group See-Saw in 1993. By 2002, she began a pivotal collaboration with Emily Bindiger for the anime .hack//Sign, a partnership that helped establish her presence in the international anime scene.

Kajiura’s career is defined by her ability to build diverse musical projects. She formed FictionJunction Yuuka in 2003, Kalafina in 2008, and the more fluid FictionJunction project in 2009. Her work is characterized by distinct musical motifs and leitmotifs. In 2018, following a contract dispute with her previous agency, Spacecraft Produce, she took full creative control by founding her own talent agency, FictionJunction Music.

Today, she is one of the most recognizable names in anime music, providing scores for massive franchises including Sword Art Online, Fate/Zero, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Her career illustrates a path of self-actualization, moving from corporate engineering to the creation of a self-governed musical empire.
