In short: From the haunting themes of Attack on Titan to the cosmic scale of Gundam, Hiroyuki Sawano has shaped the auditory identity of modern animation. With over 100 works to his name, his signature style blends intense choruses and multilingual lyrics to create an unforgettable cinematic experience.

Born in Tokyo in 1980, Hiroyuki Sawano’s journey into composition began with the piano in elementary school. Influenced early on by the singer-songwriter Aska, he later studied orchestration under Nobuchika Tsuboi starting at age 17. His formative years were shaped by the cinematic scores of Studio Ghibli’s Joe Hisaishi, a composer he still cites as a major inspiration alongside legends like Ryūichi Sakamoto and Hans Zimmer.

Sawano’s professional career began in 2004, writing for other artists, before he transitioned to soundtracks in 2006. His rise to prominence was marked by pivotal roles in major franchises. While his work on Blue Exorcist and Guilty Crown in 2011 brought him industry recognition, it was his 2013 score for the Attack on Titan adaptation that achieved global fame, earning him the Newtype Anime Award for Best Soundtrack.

A defining characteristic of Sawano’s work is his approach to titles. He frequently uses strange combinations of numbers, symbols, and various alphabets. This is a deliberate creative choice; he avoids specific imagery in titles so that listeners can form their own personal reactions to the music without being tether of the on-screen action. This philosophy extends to his compositions, which often utilize English, German, and Japanese lyrics to expand the intensity of the music.

Beyond solo work, Sawano is a prolific collaborator. In 2014, he launched the vocal project SawanoHiroyuki[nZk] to focus on artist partnerships, notably with vocalists like Aimer. He also continues to experiment with new ensembles, such as the 2022 formation of NAQT VANE, a group designed to reach international audiences.
