Voice actress Yumi Uchiyama built a prolific career after a five-year professional hiatus
In short: Born on October 30, 1987, Japanese voice actress Yumi Uchiyama has become a staple of modern anime. After debuting in 2005, she stepped away from the industry to focus on college and family, only to return with a renewed momentum that led to iconic roles in major series.
Uchiyama’s career trajectory is defined by both resilience and versatility. After her initial 2005 debut with Arts Vision, she took a five-year hiatus to manage personal circumstances and academic commitments. Her return to the industry was marked by a dubbing role in the drama Let's Love Vampire, followed quickly by her first regular anime role as Nagisa Tennōji in A Channel. This comeback solidified her presence in the competitive world of Japanese voice acting, eventually leading to her 2017 transition to the agency Office Osawa.
Her filmography spans a vast array of genres, showcasing her range across long-running franchises and seasonal hits. She is widely recognized for voicing characters such as Puck in Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, Erika Chiba in The Irregular at Magic High School, and Rudeus Greyrat in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. Her work also includes notable appearances in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans as Fumitan Admoss and Fū Inubōzaki in the Yuki Yuna is a Hero series. These roles demonstrate her ability to inhabit diverse personas, from magical creatures and high-school students to complex fantasy protagonists.
Beyond her professional achievements, Uchiyama’s personal life recently intersected with her career. On December 31, 2024, she and fellow voice actor Yūsuke Kobayashi announced their marriage through official social media channels. This milestone marks a new chapter for the performer, who continues to contribute to current productions, including roles in Shangri-La Frontier and Easygoing Territory Defense by the Optimistic Lord. Her journey from a temporary departure to becoming a prolific voice in the industry highlights the non-linear paths often taken by successful performers in the entertainment sector.
